The Craft
Built From
The Steel Up
Every blade begins with a choice. Steel, finish, heat treatment, handle, sheath — each decision shapes the final piece. Here's what goes into every knife we make.
The Blade
Steel & Finish
Each steel type carries its own character — in feel, in pattern, in edge behavior. We offer five distinct blade constructions, priced per inch of blade length.

Mono-Satin Finish
Achieved through a process of fine sanding, the satin finish presents a uniform, matte surface that carries an understated elegance. It hides minor wear gracefully, making it equally suited to a working kitchen or a display case.

Mono-Mirror Finish
Meticulous grinding and progressive buffing produce a surface that reflects like glass. The mirror finish highlights the purity of the steel and communicates the level of precision that went into every pass of the stone.

San Mai
A traditional Japanese construction: hard core steel sandwiched between two layers of softer steel. The result is exceptional edge retention on a blade that resists chipping and flexes under load rather than snapping. Balance through contrast.

Laminate (Damascus)
Different steel alloys are layered, folded, and forge-welded together. The differential properties of each layer produce a blade with toughness, edge retention, and flexibility — and a characteristic flowing pattern across the steel that is unique to every piece.

Mosaic Laminate (Damascus)
Damascus taken further. The steel layers are arranged with deliberate intent before forging, creating intricate repeating patterns — not random, but composed. Every mosaic Damascus blade is a singular work. No two are alike, and none can be exactly reproduced.
The Process
Heat Treatment
What separates an edge that lasts from one that doesn't isn't just the steel — it's what happens in the forge. We use differential heat treatment, a traditional Japanese method that produces a blade with distinct hardness zones and a visible temper line.
The spine remains flexible. The edge achieves a hardness that holds a sharpened geometry through sustained use. The transition between them — the hamon — is the mark of the method.
Method
Honyaki / Differential hardening — clay coating applied to the spine before quench
Edge hardness
Significantly higher than the spine — maximizes sharpness retention and cutting geometry
Spine flexibility
Softer steel absorbs impact and lateral stress, protecting the harder edge from chipping
Hamon
The visible temper line along the blade — a natural record of the hardening process, not decoration

The Grip
Handle Materials
Where the knife meets the hand.
All handle types are available in standard or exotic materials. When exotic materials are selected, they are sourced specifically for the customer's project — ensuring the finished piece is singular, not pulled from stock.
The Protection
Sheath & Saya
Every knife ships with purpose-built protection. The form follows the function of the blade.

Standard Sheath
Outdoor and everyday carry knives ship with a purpose-built sheath focused on safety and ease of carry. Clean, functional, durable — built for a blade that works.

Saya — Kitchen Cutlery
Each kitchen knife comes with a hand-fitted wooden saya — a traditional Japanese scabbard. Where possible, saya materials match or complement the handle. Alternatives are sourced to the same standard when exact matching isn't feasible.
